Founded in 1908 University of British Columbia

The University of British Columbia is a public university established by the province of British Columbia in Canada and has two campuses. The main campus is the “Vancouver Campus” with a history of more than 100 years in downtown Vancouver, and the other is the “Okanagan Campus” established in 2005 in Kelowna, about 390 km east of Vancouver by car.

UBC Ranks 37th place in 2021 THE Impact Rankings

UBC was founded in 1908 as a branch of McGill University and became independent in 1915. It is one of the most prestigious universities in Canada with a high international profile. *In the 2021 Times Higher Education Impact Rankings, it was ranked 37th out of over 1,100 participating universities and ranked 2nd in Canada after the University of Toronto, which was ranked 1st. It has also produced eight Nobel Prize winners, three Canadian Prime Ministers, and Olympic medalists (19 of 65 medals are gold).

The Times Higher Education Impact Rankings are rankings that visualize university social contribution initiatives using the United Nations SDGs framework, and it has been published annually since 2004 by the British journal Times Higher Education.

The Times Higher Education provide the definitive list of the world’s best universities, with an emphasis on the research mission. It is the only global university league table to judge research-intensive universities across all of their core missions: teaching (the learning environment); research (volume, income and reputation); citations (research influence); industry income (knowledge transfer) and international outlook (staff, students and research). It uses 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators to provide the most comprehensive and balanced comparisons. The overall list is accompanied by 11 subject-specific rankings.

Number of students / International students

UBC student numbers have increased by about 3% in recent years, even during the pandemic, with 58,768 students attending the Vancouver campus and 11,989 students attending the Okanagan campus. 20-30% of the students are international students from all over the world who come to study at the University of British Columbia.

According to 2021 data, China has the most international students with 6,385, followed by India with 3,062, the United States with 1,658, Iran with 611, South Korea with 553, Hong Kong with 489, Indonesia with 424, Japan with 351, followed by the United Kingdom with 287, and 5,593 international students from various other countries.
