M-Wave: A facility built for the Winter Olympics

M-Wave (Nagano City Olympic Memorial Arena), located in Nagano City, Nagano Prefecture, was used as the speed skating venue for the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics and the ice sledge speed race venue for the opening and closing ceremonies of the Nagano Paralympics. Construction of the venue began in 1994 and was completed two years later in 1996. The operation is entrusted to M-Wave Co., Ltd. by Nagano City.

Nagano City Olympic Memorial Arena: About 13,700㎡

The first indoor rink in Japan with a 400m double track certified by the International Skating Federation, equipped with a computer-based rink water quality improvement machine and ice temperature control system, providing a high-quality high-speed ice rink. It is one of the convention centers representing Nagano Prefecture, which has one of the largest arena spaces in the prefecture and also functions as a MICE venue.

M-Wave: Japan’s first indoor speed skating rink

Since the Olympics, many important speed skating competitions have been held, such as the World Cups and World Distance Championships sponsored by the International Skating Federation, all-Japan class competitions, and the Japan Olympic Trials. In addition, from October to March every year, the general public can also enjoy the memorial skating rink, and various events are held such as using the ice hockey rink, skating classes, and ice-refining rides. There are 10,000 skating visitors.

M-Wave has enough space and facilities to accommodate international exhibitions

In winter, it serves as a world-class ice skating arena (from late September to mid-March every year), and in summer, it offers an arena space that accommodates a variety of sports, music, culture, and events.

There are two movable stand seats on the east and west sides, and it is designed to be used for a wide range of purposes by moving according to the purpose of use. There are about 6,500 fixed seats at maximum, and about 3,000 seats can be accommodated when moved in a circle.

As a wide variety of floor shapes are possible, the space can be freely used for not only concerts, sporting events, ceremonies and gatherings, but also for holding two events at the same time.

Many trade fairs and large-scale exhibitions are held every year, and about 250,000 people visit every year. The arena can accommodate exhibitions with approximately 300 vehicles, as well as large-scale exhibits such as agricultural machinery and camping cars. There is also a parking space for about 900 cars for visitors on the premises.

The appearance of M-Wave is said to represent the mountains of Shinshu, and the shape of the gable side of the roof is M-shaped, so it looks like a wave, so it is called M-WAVE.

There is an audio-visual control room on the 3rd floor, which can be used for various stages and gathering events. With two large video devices and a sound system that envelops the entire arena, an unprecedented event space is made possible. There are also VIP rooms on the third floor, which can be subdivided into up to 11 rooms.

A large screen of approximately 4.3m x 9m. It is located in two places, the main stand and the back stand. In 2010, the LCD screen (LED) was repaired.
